The Health Center is the place to go if a student is ill, needs to make a medical appointment, renew a prescription, receive an over-the-counter medication, or for any health related question. Three nurses work full-time on a rotating basis, so that two nurses are usually on hand in the Health Center, providing nurturing care with confidentiality and humane discipline, an approach that helps students maintain good health while meeting academic and other responsibilities. Physicians are available for appointments with boarding students at the center twice a week, and are also available to consult with the nursing staff 24/7. If a student needs to visit a specialist or see a doctor outside the center, transportation is provided. Students who are unable to attend class or who have a contagious illness or fever can stay at the Health Center under the care of a nurse.
Through the Health Center, students also have access to several mental health professionals, including an adolescent psychiatrist, a psychologist who comes to campus twice a week for appointments with students, and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker sees students on a weekly basis. These professionals work with parents and students and consult with the Health Center on a regular basis.
Health Education classes
All freshman students participate in a Health Education class, which covers a broad range of subjects from nutrition to substance abuse to sex in the media. Throughout the year, the Health Center also arranges for speakers to come to campus and share information about pertinent topics, such as body image, sexual health, and healthy living. In addition, the Health Center supports personal well-being activities, like Spa Night in the girls' dorm and a visiting masseuse for students and faculty.
The nurses, who are liaisons between teachers, parents, physicians, and the school community, educate students on a daily basis. They understand the diverse needs of students and they regularly assist students with issues of personal responsibility.
