 "GREEN SWEEP" GARAGE SALE
The Hebron Academy Parents' Association will host the school's first "Green Sweep" garage sale on Saturday, June 12, from 9 AM to 3 PM at the Robinson Arena on Rt. 119. The event is free and open to the public. "Each year we have items left in the dorms that students either cannot or do not want to take back home," explained "Green Sweep" coordinator Sheila Shelley, a Hebron parent. "This is our effort to recycle unwanted, re-saleable items and, at the same time, turn them into funds to help support on-campus student programs." Items for sale include sports equipment, clothing, books, and dorm room necessities such as bedding, lamps and alarm clocks. The "Green Sweep" sale continues the "green" theme of campus activity, sparked by the opening of the energy-efficient athletic center last year, as students and staff increase their efforts to reduce paper use, conserve resources, and increase recycling. The Parents' Association will host the event, and any items remaining after the sale will be donated to local charities. |

 PARENTS' ASSOCIATION AUCTION
Save the date! Please plan to join us on Saturday, May 1, for the annual Hebron Academy Parents' Association's Auction, one of the many activities of Spring Family Weekend!
In a new format this year, our fun-filled evening will feature a silent auction and dinner, followed by a live auction with Hebron’s favorite auctioneer, Dave Murphy. Items for your bidding include a vacation week in the Bahamas, Thomas Moser furniture, and front row reserved seats at Hebron’s graduation.
Last year, the auction raised over $16,000 for support of our students. The Parents' Association provided funds for student activities and advisory groups, supported the all-school musical, and helped to fund technology improvements in the classrooms. Every student at Hebron has been touched in some way -- this is what the Parents' Association is all about.
As the work of soliciting and collecting items begins, your help is needed. Please consider making a donation to the auction -- and ensure funding for all the special student projects that come up throughout the year. One of the best parts about the Hebron auction is that everyone can be involved. From student goody baskets and vacations, to artwork and rounds of golf at the local country club, your personal donation makes the Hebron auction one of the most unique around. Some ideas for donations include gift baskets, a stay in a vacation home, jewelry, antiques, artwork, sports memorabilia, ski lift tickets, professional services, gift cards to local restaurants and stores (TGIFriday’s, Applebees, WalMart and BestBuy), cash donations, and tickets to a sporting or entertainment event.
To donate an item, please call me at 207-345-9754 (email: SRGiz@aol.com), or complete the enclosed form and return it to the academy at the address above. We would appreciate receiving pledges by April 23, 2010. The Parents’ Association auction is an event where day and boarding parents, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees and friends of the academy can come together to support the school in an evening of entertainment and fun. Don't miss being a part of this year's exciting event!
Your formal invitation to attend will be in the mail soon. We look forward to hearing from you!

 LONG WEEKEND HOSTS NEEDED
|
 SCHOOL NEWSPAPER FORMING
For many years, Hebron had a school newspaper, The Hebronian. Last year, however, it was discontinued. While the academy still has a yearbook and a magazine, a newspaper is needed to support student voices and give them an opportunity to express their opinions. A school newspaper promises to help unite the school and offer more information about the community. This year, about 20 students have expressed an interest in restoring the newspaper, and three seniors, Emma Leavitt, Sangil Min, and Emily Powers have been selected as editors. The newspaper will be published once a month, both online and in print, beginning on October 23. |

 MAIL CALL
The Business Office reports that students have mail at the post office and packages waiting to be picked up that have been there for quite some time. Students should check the post office at least once a week, and ask at the window if they are not sure if they have packages. Also, students need to check for interoffice mail in their assigned boxes downstairs in the science building.

 CALLING ALL SHUTTERBUGS
The Hupper Art Gallery is preparing for a special art exhibit in October focusing on Family, and the Art Department would like to invite all members of the school community to send in snapshots (casual photographs) of students with their families. The idea is to present candid shots of family, preferably not professional, studio photographs, but true “snapshots” of Hebron families in a variety of settings.
This will only work if we have significant participation, so we hope you will consider being a part of one of our first fall Gallery shows of 2009-2010! Photos can be color or black and white and should not be larger than 8x10. Please label the back of your photo with your family name so we can return it to your student when done.
The submission deadline is Friday, Sept. 25th. Photos will be collected by Julie Middleton in the Admissions Department, PO Box 309 Hebron, ME, 04238. Installation will be handled primarily by Art faculty member and Gallery Manager, Mary Anderson. Please feel free to contact either with any questions, jmiddleton@hebronacademy.org or manderson@hebronacademy.org |

 SHARE CENTER MAKES RECYCLING EASY
Hebron Academy has once again become a member of the Share Center, a non profit organization that converts refuse from local manufacturers into available items for educators. The materials vary as they receive them, but usually contain paper products, wood, books, furniture, fabrics, etc. It's a great way to teach the value of recycling.
The business is located on Academy street, Auburn, (behind Hannaford's) in the basement of the old Great Falls school building. Hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 12-6 and every first Saturday of the month 9-12. Walk in, find the binder that says Hebron, fill it out, grab a clip board and jot down what you gather, then check it off with whoever is behind the desk. You will be asked to write a short thank you note on a large sign-up sheet, but that's all there is to it. --Mary Anderson
