Hebron Celebrates Day of Silence

Hebron Celebrates Day of Silence

The Day of Silence is a national day of recognition for equality and awareness in support of the LGBTQ community. It was founded on the college level in 1996 and has spread to all ranges of schools across the US and many other countries. Hebron has recognized this for many years! This year, the Day of Silence is Friday, April 24.

In the past, we have been able to celebrate with a moment of reflection, tabling outside the Dining Hall, enjoying beautiful rainbow cupcakes by Sage Dining Services, breaking the silence by ringing the bell! The GSTA would encourage students to take this day for a vow of silence to help raise awareness for students of the LGBTQ+ community who have been silenced from bullying and harassment.

For this year, the GSTA encourages students and staff to use a day of silence Zoom background and post a photo wearing black in solidarity. They are also happy to report that the Rainbow Flag will be on display on campus at Hebron Academy!

Sophomore student, Rica Wong, shared the poem Children Learn What They Live by Dorothy Law Nolte, for all to consider in honor of this week.

Children Learn What They Live by Dorothy Law Nolte

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.
If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.
If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal.
If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.
If children live with fairness, they learn justice.
If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect.
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them.
If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.
