This Week in Hams 10/17-10/21

We have completed our 7th week of classes! With all aspects of school life in full swing, HAMS students continue to work at balancing their school work, homework, after school activities and free and social time. We will continue to encourage them to prioritize their academic work so that they can better enjoy their free time. Grades for the fall semester midterm close on Friday, October 21st and teachers and advisors will be working on the midterm grade reports soon. 

HAMS Union Takeover

This Friday, October 21, HAMS students are holding a student union take over from 7 - 9pm. HAMS student council members have been planning this event and it’s sure to be a fun time for all!

HAMS Halloween Party

The HAMS Halloween party for the younger children on campus (and siblings, etc.) will take place on Friday, October 28 from 4 - 5pm in the Bowl (rain location is the Williams Athletic Center). HAMS students will plan and run the various activities and younger students from the community are encouraged to attend in costume. 

Fall semester midpoint

In the next week, we reach the midpoint of fall semester. Time feels like it’s moved so quickly! Students are getting reminders from teachers to hand in missing work and classes are hitting some major tests and assignments. Now is a good time to take a look at your student’s grades in MyHebron and share successes and challenges with them. Remember, here’s how to access your student’s class information: 

1. Log in to MyHebron 

2. Click on your student’s name in the upper left of the screen (if you have more than one student at Hebron, you will find a drop-down menu of names here)

3. You should be directed to the Progress tab

4. Scroll down to the Courses section

5. Click on the “See grade detail” tab in the first course to see individual grades and comments that the teacher has left

6. Select “Next Course” at the bottom of the pop-up window to advance to the next course in the alphabetical list

Travel Plans

Leading up to Thanksgiving Break, we are getting several questions about travel plans for students – to demystify the process a little, here are three different categories of travel for students that you should be aware of: 

WEEKEND TRAVEL: If you are interested in taking your boarding student (or any boarding student) off campus for a weekend, reach out to Dean of Students Mrs. Mae Applegate (mapplegate@hebronacademy.org) when you are formulating your plans. Plans for students traveling off campus for the weekend should be finalized the Wednesday prior to departure. 

SPORTS TRAVEL: If your student (boarding or day) is traveling for an independent sporting event, please connect through the Athletic Director Mr. Caddy Brooks (cbrooks@hebronacademy.org). Plans for off-campus travel should be finalized two days before departure. 

BREAK TRAVEL: For the upcoming Thanksgiving Break, students will see a survey requesting their travel plans from the Director of Residential Life Mr. Zach Hensley this week. Students will share their plans for this break, and the Res Life office will confirm plans with parents. Look for an email from travel@hebronacademy.org in the coming weeks. Parents should respond to confirm their students’ travel plans. Look for similar emails shortly about Winter Break. If you have any questions about your student’s long distance travel at any time, you can email travel@hebronacademy.org. 

Middle School Student Council

We would like to thank all of the middle school students who ran for student council this year! The Middle School Student Council will consist of three student from the 6th grade and 7th grades and three students from the 8th grade.

Carpool information

We have had parents ask about the potential for carpooling to and from school with other families. Any families interested in carpooling and willing to share their contact information are welcome to fill out the carpool information spreadsheet. 

HAMS Soccer

HAMS soccer is in full swing and we are excited to have a full squad this year. Practice is every afternoon at 4pm and players should have cleats, shin guards and a water bottle each day. The HAMS soccer page on Hebron’s website may be accessed here.

HAMS soccer traveled to Portland on Wednesday, October 19 to take on Lyman Moore Middle School. The Lyman Moore squad was large and skilled and quickly jumped on the scoreboard in the first half. The Hebron defense tried to slow the attack, but the opposition had too many weapons. Hebron did get on the board in the second half when Sawyer Shanaman scored on a beautiful feed from Bayden Cyr-Guzowski. The Lumberjacks did their best to keep the game competitive. Nolan Heath and Corbin Poussard shared the goalkeeping duties and they both fended off numerous shots. Even though they were down from the start, the Hebron players kept fighting and kept their composure for the entire game. The final was 7 - 1 Lyman Moore which brings the HAMS soccer record to 2 - 1.

Our final game of the season will be against Whittier Middle School in Poland on Thursday, 10/27 at 3:30pm.

We had our second game of the season on Tuesday, 10/4, at Bonny Eagle Middle school. The HAMS squad was a little sluggish at the start of the game from the hour bus ride against a solid Bonny Eagle team. The play was back and forth for most of the first half. Near the end of half, Isaac Sullivan sent in a beautiful corner kick into the 18 which Bayden Cyr-Guzowski headed into the back of the net. The lumberjacks held on to that 1-0 lead at the half. During the second half, Bonny Eagle turned up the pressure and finally found the back of the net evening the score at 1-1. Later in the second half, Sawyer Shanaman took a great cross from Will Malloy and lifted a shot over the goaltender’s head for a 2-1 lead. Hebron finished the game strong to hold on the 2 to 1 victory! Once again, Nolan Heath was solid in net. The defensive line of Riley Phillps, Bradley Powers, Oscar Diffin, Howie Wu and Perrin Gill kept us in the game with great play throughout the game, and Corbin Poussard, Allen Saracho, Finn Miller and Alexandra Hounsell at the front kept the ball moving forward toward the opposing goal throughout the game. 

We had our first game of the season on Wednesday, 9/28 vs. Lewiston Middle School. This was the first HAMS soccer game in three years and the team came ready to play. The entire team played a solid match which led to a 6 to 1 victory. Bayden Cry-Guzowski lead the scoring for the Lumberjacks netting four goals and registering 2 assists. Sawyer Shanaman scored off a beautiful assist from Bayden and Corbin Poussard scored the final goal with a strong shot to the upper right corner of the net. Hebron’s midfield of Bayden and Isaac Sullivan controlled the game. Riley Phillips, Oscar Diffin and Bradley Powers were solid all game on defense and Nolan Heath had a tremendous game in net. Congratulations Lumberjacks on solid first win of the season!
