Hebron Academy Celebrates Successful First Season of 8-Man Football

The Hebron Academy football program made the move to 8-man football for the 2019 season. By all accounts, it has been an exciting and successful transition. Hebron finished the season with an overall record of 5 -2 and a league record of 4 - 1. The team was anchored by a core of returning players and bolstered by new players who were drawn to the 8-man style of play. Long-time coach, Tom Radulski, was able to adapt the team to take advantage of the openness of the game and the emphasis on agility and speed.

The Hebron football team won multiple key games, including the Homecoming game against Holderness School and the ‘Headmaster’s Chair’ game against their main rival, Kents Hill School, with whom Hebron has a history of football competition for over 100 years.  The Lumberjacks advanced to the New England Prep School 8-man Football League Play-offs, where they were ultimately defeated by Pomfret School.

Team captains, Jack Kelley of Pembroke, MA and Andrew Airosus, of Quincy, MA were recently recognized by Athletic Director Leslie Guenther as Hebron Featured Fall Athletes. Andrew Airosus ‘20 had a strong football season on both sides of the ball, both as a top defensive player and as the team’s leading receiver.  Andrew also led the team in tackles and interceptions, and he had a kick-off return for a touchdown. As a second year player on the team, Jack Kelley ‘20 proved to be one of the top quarterbacks in the 8-man football league.  He had a strong completion average throwing  a number of touchdown passes throughout the season. Jack and Andrew provided excellent leadership and helped in the development of players new to the team and to football.

“We had the right boys on the field for implementing 8-Man, a great attitude and strong work ethic. We have high expectations for our returning players, and look forward to seeing the program continue to develop in the next few years,” says Radulski.
