Hebron Academy celebrates first annual Maine Day

Hebron Academy recently enjoyed a Headmaster’s Holiday, “Maine Day” to celebrate the abundant outdoor opportunities that Maine has to offer. “With students from 20 countries and 16 different states, what better way to introduce all to the incredible beauty and experiential learning available in Maine than by getting outside?” says Head of School, Dan Marchetti.

Marchetti, in his fourth year as Hebron’s Head of School, is an avid outdoorsman who regularly takes students on sunrise trail runs or afternoon rock-climbing excursions. The overall tenet that taking on new challenges builds leadership, resilience and compassion are regular themes that prevail in the philosophy of engaging students with the great outdoors at Hebron Academy. The Academy has 1500 acres, one of the largest land mass schools in the country, which includes mountains, ponds and miles of trails for the outdoor enthusiast or novice to enjoy.

Senior student, Ellena Frumiento from Auburn, Maine said, “It was fun for those of us from Maine to be able to show our classmates from around the country and world some of the adventure opportunities we have right here in our backyard.” Toni Schuchardt from Kronberg, Germany added, “I expected a lot coming to school at Hebron Academy, but learning to surf with one of my art teachers was a great surprise!”

For Hebron’s Maine Day, students chose a variety of events from hiking Morse Mountain, exploring Acadia or Rangely, fall surfing at Higgins Beach, apple picking at Ricker Hill Farm, horseback riding, canoeing and even spending the day at the Fryeburg Fair. All 250 students spread out over the state to experience a perfect fall day, resonating the state’s motto: “the way life should be.”
