"CINDERELLA" SMASH MUSICAL DELIGHTS ALL

Real entertainment could be found right here at 339 Paris Road, when The Hebron Academy Players packed the house for Cinderella, the 11th annual all-school musical comprising students, staffers and faculty on February 22 and 23. Friday night's show played host to a whopping 500+ audience members (that’s double Hebron's student population, mind you) from across Oxford Hills; our youngest guests even donned their puffiest tu-tus and tiaras for the magical occasion; it was truly an enchanted evening for all participants and a show for the books. Thank you to cast and crew and to all the fans and parents who showed support for our tremendous young thespians. Thank you also to student potters and patrons of the Arts, who purchased Hebron-made mugs with ice cream at intermission, benefiting our local community. Photos and video are available, or click on "Media Gallery" on the website homepage.

Director Julie Middleton, responsible for rejuvenating Hebron’s musical theater presence more than a decade ago, headed up this year’s production. Each year since joining Hebron she faces the excitement – and challenge – of handpicking the script.

Cinderella had been on my show to-do list for a long time,” Ms. Midd asserts. “The reason we did Cinderella this year is because I have a musical director, Ms. Kelly Caufield [who joined Hebron Academy this past fall], who is equally enamored by Rodgers and Hammerstein and because I like to cycle different types of musical experiences through the school to expose students to a range of styles and genres.”

To Ms. Midd’s point, past Hebron productions have included a grab bag of musical favorites: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Seussical The Musical, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Last year’s rendition of Stephen Schwartz’ Working packed the house both nights – despite an inopportune snowstorm (hey that’s Maine!). History repeated itself this year when a weather kerfuffle slightly impacted audience turnout on closing night.

Students, faculty and staff alike were equally thrilled for this year’s production – who doesn’t love a classic? Ms. Midd affirms, “It's one of the musicals I grew up singing along with, and I have found that most people have a distinct Cinderella memory.” So what differentiates Hebron’s take on the fan favorite from the rest? “What I think people may enjoy about our Cinderella is the unique setting and the fact that we have an international cast. Students from Brazil, Canada, Germany, China along with others from Lewiston, Gray, Hebron and across the States are part of this talented troupe,” according to Ms. Midd. The brooding yet devastatingly handsome Prince Christopher was played by Alex Guay '13 of Canada, and local student Lilly Bourget '13 of Hebron took on the role of Cinderella herself.

To provide some historical context on this timeless tale, our friends at www.rnh.com offer this:

The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.
