Tom McCabe – Long-time Bowdoin LAX Coach – Joins the Lumberjacks
Hebron, ME – Hebron Academy is pleased to announce that Tom McCabe, former long-time head lacrosse coach at Bowdoin College, will be joining the Lumberjacks as the head boys’ lacrosse coach.

McCabe, who will also be coaching football for the Lumberjacks, brings an outstanding level of coaching and sportsmanship experience to Hebron. Under McCabe the Bowdoin Polar Bears won two ECAC championships, made 10 NESCAC tournament appearances and won the NCAA tournament in 2008. He is ranked in the top 20 all-time winningest coaches in Div. III history. Some of his players have gone on to do some amazing things, including three-time All-American honorable mention and First Team All-NESCAC player Owen “Kit” Smith, who went on to play in the MLL for the Boston Cannons. Smith, who coincidentally coached lacrosse at Hebron from 2011 to 2013, credits McCabe with giving him the opportunity to play at Bowdoin as a walk on.

But McCabe’s winning record and star players are only part of the story – he also brings with him a strong sense of community and giving back, something that is an essential element at the core of the Hebron experience. Previous colleagues cite his an ability to bring young people together, and how much he cares about his players and their entire educational experience, both on and off the field. This community service acumen is what lead Tom, along with his wife Pat – herself a Physical Education teacher – to serve the past two years in the Peace Corps in Africa. While there, the couple channeled their teaching and coaching energies into numerous projects – including renovating a school, providing health education classes, and building an orphanage.

“We are very excited to have Tom join our ranks on campus,” said John King, Head of School. “He brings with him not only a top-notch coaching resume, but a strength of character and community service that we feel will be a huge asset to the Hebron community.” When not on the playing fields, McCabe will also be part of the Hebron Admissions team, helping to cultivate and recruit more future Lumberjacks.

Prior to his tenure at Bowdoin, McCabe was the boy's lacrosse and football coach at Bridgton Academy. He was also a member of the Bowdoin football staff, where he coached the quarterbacks and offensive backfield. McCabe earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Springfield College where he was a two-time Honorable Mention All-New England selection for the Springfield football team. He currently lives in Brunswick with his wife Pat, but they will reside full-time on the Hebron campus this fall.
