Michael Tahiru '18 to play Div 1 Soccer

Only 1.3% of high school soccer players in the United States earn the chance to play at the NCAA Division 1 level1. Michael Tahiru of Hebron Academy has beaten those challenging odds and accepted an offer to attend Lehigh University. He will play soccer for the Division 1 Lehigh Mountain Hawks in the Patriot League.

“It takes serious commitment and hard work on the soccer pitch and more importantly, in the classroom, to be a Division 1 player. Michael has developed as a leader and improved as a student-athlete in his time at Hebron. I could not be happier for him,” says Kurt Swanbeck, Hebron’s Head Coach for Boys’ Soccer. Swanbeck is known for his life-lessons coaching style. “I always make sure I am teaching these guys something on the field. Sometimes it has nothing to do with soccer and more to do with being a good human being. I think Coach Dean Koski (at Lehigh) is the perfect coach to help Michael continue his journey” says Swanbeck.

Tahiru, a junior from Accra, Ghana, scored 35 goals this season for Hebron, helping the Lumberjacks to an 18-0 record and a New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Championship. “Coach Swanbeck is an excellent coach and an incredible mentor and role model for me and everyone on the team. Hebron has been my second home and it has changed my life forever. After completing my bachelor’s degree at Lehigh, my dream is to play professional soccer. Eventually I plan to study Law and earn my JD,” says Tahiru.
