JASON SPINDLER, KENYA ATTACK VICTIM, REMEMBERED BY HEBRON ACADEMY
Jason Spindler, originally from Houston, Texas, was a boarding student at Hebron Academy who graduated with the Class of 1996. A survivor of 9/11, tragically he was killed in the recent attack in Nairobi, Kenya. He will be remembered at Hebron as a person who was developing into a leader and who always worked hard for his success. During his two years at Hebron, Jason was involved in the Diversity, Outing, and Radio Clubs. As well, he was a volunteer student tour-guide, participated in football, and was captain of the swim team.
“Jason was always smiling and fully engaged in the various activities of school life. He was a person anyone would be proud to know. It is clear he made many positive contributions to our world after graduating from Hebron. All of us who are connected with Hebron are proud of him and will miss him”, says Jack Leyden, former Associate Head of School.
In his professional life, Jason was a Co-Founder of I-DEV and spent more than 15 years advising large and small corporations on growth, management, and financial strategy. As an investment banker at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup, Jason helped high-growth global tech/telcom companies raise capital, and he led buyouts and acquisitions of manufacturing and operating companies for AlixPartners’ private equity fund. He also managed and led the growth of a locally-owned agribusiness in Northern Peru during his service in the U.S. Peace Corps and advised over a hundred emerging markets small and medium-sized enterprises on growth and capital strategy. Jason received his Juris Doctorate from NYU Law, and a B.S. in Business from University of Texas–Austin.
In his yearbook, Jason wrote, “I’ve learned a lot here, above all I’ve learned who I am.” It was clear that Hebron held a special place in his heart. The extended Hebron community is proud that he found and followed his passions. His friend and business partner for 10 years, Patricia Chin-Sweeney, says it best on her Facebook page, “Jason was an inspiration to us all to aspire to only the best, to never settle, to never take the easy road and to always focus on fighting for what you believe in - no matter the cost.”
Jason made a difference in the lives of many people and in the world. He will be missed by all who knew him.
