2015 Opening Convocation

By: Hebron Academy
On September 14th, Hebron Academy began its tradition of starting the school year with Opening Convocation. For some, it was the first time they lined up in their class years and walked through the doors of Hebron Community Baptist Church to listen to the moving words of this year's senior class advisor Ms. Katie Ftorek or be addressed by current Head of School, John King.  For others, this was as familiar as the first day of school with the students around them either old friends or the promise of new friends.

Head of School John King urged them to make memories that would last a lifetime instead of the facimilie of a selfie which only takes a digital image and not a memory; and he welcomed the newest batch of Lumberjacks to be proud and to live by the core values of our school.  This year, Hebron Academy has resurrected a new core value involving diversity.

At Hebron we welcome and support individuality, respect for difference, and the value of each person’s contribution.

To support that message, Hebron Academy was host to Chris Waddell, the founder of One Revolution Foundation which is a non-profit focused on "turning the perception of disability upside-down", a 13 time paralympic medalist, and the first paraplegic to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro.  He spoke about the nametags people wear, both the ones they don't have any control over and the ones they do, and how to cope with some of life's unexpected turns.  He was both inspirational and thought provoking and shared some of his own life stories and successes.  His motto is "It's not what happens to you.  It's what you do with what happens to you."
