Diversity and Inclusion

At Hebron Academy, we have always believed that the ideal learning community is one in which diverse voices are represented, valued, and nurtured. Today more than ever, we embrace the globally connected nature of our world and all of the exciting opportunities it brings. We are therefore very proud of our welcoming multicultural community, in which curious students from all around the world come together to learn the cross-cultural skills that they will need to achieve ethical, sustainable, and successful lives. These skills are actively taught in our classrooms, through our extracurricular offerings, and during community-wide events and celebrations. By learning these skills and expanding their cultural horizons, Lumberjacks are prepared to be the next generation of leaders who will creatively and empathetically work towards a more just and compassionate world.

How are diversity, equity, and inclusion supported?

  • Diverse course offerings that expose students to multiple perspectives, experiences, and viewpoints. Courses include Race, Ethnicity, and Gender; Sociology (with a social justice focus); Music in Society; etc.
  • Representation in our curriculum from a variety of authors, historians, scientists, mathematicians, and artists.
  • Off-campus experiences that provide opportunities for students to expand their worldview. Recent examples include theater events, historical visits to Boston, museums in Portland, and lectures at local colleges.
  • In-class guest speakers such as representatives from Homeless Voices for Justice and Equality Maine.
  • Active participation in the Round Square network of schools. This includes the Round Square student committee that implements school-wide service initiatives and cultural experiences. Students also have the opportunity to travel with the Round Square organization on service trips and to international conferences. Recent trips have been to Canada, Peru, and Morocco.
  • Service learning with non-profit organizations in the local community such as Trinity Jubilee Center, Good Shepard Food Bank, Community Concepts, and others.
  • A vibrant student-led GSTA group that facilitates activities to heighten awareness and sensitivity toward LGBTQ+ issues in the community. This often includes speakers, workshops, and special events.
  • A residential life curriculum that provides the space and support for students to develop empathy and understanding. Students engage in activities and discussion to better understand others’ cultural perspectives.
  • Recent cultural and service learning trips to Puerto Rico, China, and areas of New England.
